How fast does an arrow need to travel to bring down a whitetail deer?

Also what would the draw weight be to get a bow to shoot an arrow at this speed?

Any recommended bows would be appreciated. Please leave a link if you know it.How fast does an arrow need to travel to bring down a whitetail deer?
235 fps will take a whitetail at 25 yards with no problem.

You will require a minimum of 45lbs of draw to legally hunt with the bow. Many of the bows today are pushing in the 300fps area and speed will be no problem.

If you are just starting out then I would suggest one of two things.

1. Check out Cabelas or Basspro for brand names, as many times these bows are excellent in all ways.

Heres one from cabelas that would be very good:

2. Go to an archery shop near you and find a used Hoyt, Mathews, or Bowtec brand bow. These are the top names in archery and even used, these bows are far better than anything else on the market. You may spend $200.00 or as high as $1000.00 for one of them. You can speak with the shop people and they will be able to help you understand what each brand has going for it. I would suggest going anyway before buying anything so that you can hold the bow your interested in !

As a note to uKantSpel, the law states that 45lb draw is the least you can use. I use a Hoyt Cybertec with carbon arrows and sometimes cosmic eclipse arrows running around 335fps. For normal shots this is over kill !

I take it he has never shot a deer with a 45lb bow at ranges of up to 20 yards my bow puts a razor shrp broadhead through both lungs and the point exits the other side! No pass throughs ever but I have never needed it with my bow!

A Darton make's a nice bow. Go to your archery store / shop the new compound bow's can be 45 lbs and quiet the speed is awesome you need to be fitted ,lengh of arrow 's 29 30 inch draw thay can fit you and you can try out the new bow's be for you buy it. gl
Dont worry about speed of the arrow a 45lb bow is good enough to take any game in the USA with a good vitals shot but many states have poundage guidelines!

It is shot placement and a razor sharp broadhead in the heart/lungs that does the job!

Keep your shots at a reasonable range that you have the best accuracy in! (ie: if you can keep a 3'; group out to a specific yardage and not exeding the bows killing range )

I have taken a one shot clean kill on a doe at 64 yards with a full 11'; penetration of arrow shaft plus broadhead length with my 45lb recurve bow.On bigger or thicker skinned game I limited my shots to 20 yards max.

Now about the bows!

PSE makes very good bows for the beginer archer but so do other companies. So your best bet is to find a good archery shop in your area and look around at bows they have.

Now pick the bow up see how it feels to you!

If you dont like it dont buy it!

Buy a bow with adjustable draw weights and length in your range to grow with!

Please do not go into a shop and grab a bow and pull it back because you dry fire you buy!
It should be going at least 200fps (feet per second) or faster. These guys saying 45lb bows are fine creep me out. Yes, it's sporting, but not when you wound the animal with a slower and possibly indirect shot.

My Nova PSE 70lb draw fires my heavier aluminum arrows at 240fps, (has never failed to bring down a deer.) My buddy has a Jennings (I think) 70lb draw with light carbons and his are close to 300fps.
It doesn't take much force what it takes is precision, you can hit a deer with an arrow going 500 fps but if you make a bad shot it will not go down easily and the animal will suffer. An arrow going 500 fps and an arrow going 200 fps will accomplish the same thing if your aim is true.My suggestion is to concentrate less on maxing out on speed and draw weight and concentrate more on shooting a bow you can pull back easily and hold steady, bow hunting is not about power its about precision.I would say though that 45 pounds of draw weight should be the minimum, anything less may lack the penetration you need to reach the vital areas,if i were you i would start there and work up if you wanted.
STOP HUNTING! It makes you feel like a big man, well what if it was the deer hunting you, how would you feel then?
well now theres no limit on how fast but how many ft.lbs.(foot pounds) i cant remeber what the number is
